Hair Restoration with Microneedling - Tempe Holistic Skin Care & Med Spa in Tempe, AZ

What is microneedling and how does it work?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that is typically used in treating the effects of aging, as it increases collagen production in the skin. Although microneedling is primarily used in anti-aging treatments, it can also be used as a treatment for hair loss – including hereditary hair loss, which is known as alopecia.

The process of microneedling – which is also known by the less common name of collagen induction therapy – works by repeatedly puncturing the skin with very fine, sterile needles. It is typically performed with a device known as a roller, which causes tiny micro-injuries to the skin and the healing process for these tiny punctures trigger collagen production. The needles contained within the rollers reach the middle layers of the skin, which provides for better results than just topical treatments.

In the case of using microneedling to treat hair loss, the procedure helps with strengthening the hair follicles and encouraging new growth. Your practitioner will apply a local anesthetic to your scalp prior to your treatment, which helps reduce any discomfort you may experience during the procedure. The length of your treatment will be determined by the size of the treated area, but at minimum it will last is thirty minutes. Once your treatment is done, your practitioner might apply either a soothing balm or serum to the area to help treat any inflammation or discomfort that results from the microneedling treatment.

What are the benefits of microneedling for hair loss?

Microneedling has been thought to help with hair loss by stimulating the stem cells in the scalp which are linked to hair growth. Additionally, microneedling treatments to the scalp can help encourage the absorption of hair growth products – an example being minoxidil (more commonly known as Rogaine) – and get them deeper into the scalp, which allows for a deeper treatment of hair loss.

It is important to note that it can take up to nine months for you to see results from microneedling treatment on your skin. There are instances of seeing minor improvements within two to three months of treatment, with more major ones being noted after six months. Your timeline will be different from others, but you should be seeing gradual changes and improvements in hair growth following treatment.

What is the cost for microneedling treatment when it comes to treating hair loss?

Typically, since it is considered to be a cosmetic procedure, microneedling is not covered by insurance and, thus, the cost of treatment is usually out of pocket. The cost of a single treatment can range between $400 to $700, with the cost of your visit being determined by the size of area you are having treated – the larger the area treated is, the higher the cost will be.

Microneedling sessions are usually scheduled every two to six weeks, depending on your practitioner, your skin, and what results you want to achieve. However, it is possible that you can have some of your costs covered by insurance if you can prove that you are receiving the treatment for a medically valid reason.
