What causes inflammation?

Inflammation is a natural process that happens in our body to provide protection from injury, infection, or disease, sometimes without us even knowing it’s happening. Inflammation enables our bodies to heal. There are two main classifications of inflammation: acute inflammation and chronic inflammation.

Acute inflammation appears quickly and typically resolves itself within two weeks of appearing for a short, but often severe, period of time. This type of inflammation is responsible for restoring the body back to its original state from before an injury or illness. Chronic inflammation is usually a less severe form and is more gradual. Inflammation lasting longer than 6 weeks is typically classified as chronic and it can occur even if there is no injury or illness to fight off. When there is an injury or illness, chronic inflammation doesn’t always go away once the body has healed.

Autoimmune disorders and stress over a prolonged period of time can be linked to chronic inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by acute or chronic conditions, certain medications, exposure to an irritant or foreign matter, and certain types of foods.

  • Increase your consumption of plant-based, nutrient-dense, whole foods that will provide your body with the vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, fiber, and antioxidants it needs to fight chronic inflammation.
  • Focus on your gut health, as 60 to 70 percent of the body’s immune system is held in the gut.
  • Determine any food allergies or sensitivities, as well as any infections that you may be unaware of as these can be creating inflammation on an ongoing basis.
  • Relax and get your sleep to allow the body to repair and restore your cells. It is recommended that adults get 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night. Reducing stress will also increase the likelihood of inflammation.
